Broadway Cares... a lot.

When I was a Senior in High School, I was an International Thespian Officer (ITO). For those of you who don't know - the International Thespian Society (ITS) is the Honor Society for Theatre Students.  You earn your right to be inducted into the ITS through music and theatre related participation.  For example, roles in plays, musicals, volunteering, being a part of the crew, building sets, stage managing, etc.

The summer before my senior year at Southwest High School, my Theatre Director (and close friend) Bob Henrichs encouraged me to run for the International Thespian Officer Board, which is comprised of 7 students that represent all Thespians.  They also help plan and run the International Thespian Festival which occurs every summer on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus!  The ITO plans the nightly dances, run a week long leadership workshop, introduce shows and volunteer backstage along with 1,000 other various tasks.

I ran and was lucky enough to be awarded the position of 'Region II Representative.'  That was one of the best experiences of my life.  I got to represent Nebraska and my High School's Thespian Troupe all around the country.  I lead my own Leadership Workshops in Nebraska, Iowa and Georgia at their State Theatre Conventions.  I also had the pleasure of being in charge of fundraising for an organization very near and dear to my heart called "Broadway Cares/Equity Fights A.I.D.S" (BC/EFA) based out of New York City. BC/EFA is a non-profit organization that works tirelessly to aid actors and families of actors who have been infected with HIV/AIDS.  They provide a lot of education to communities and various types of support (emotional, financial, etc.) to those in need.

In the fall of 2003, my ITO board and I met with our liaisons in NYC to start the festival planning and to help raise money for BC/EFA through their annual fundraising Flea Market in Shubert Alley.  This event brings in thousands of Broadway actors, crew, admirers, stalkers (ha!) and Thespians every year to buy old signed playbills, costumes, baked goods, autographed posters, music, meet cast members and be entertained!  That summer at Festival I also facilitated a week-long game called 'Coin Wars' where at the end of the week I was proud to present a check to BC/EFA for over $5,000.00!!!

As you all know, I have been spending the last month in New York working on my own career, but was ECSTATIC when Nancy Brown (who was also student-liasion when I was an ITO) invited me to return this year to spend time with her and the current ITO's in Shubert Alley.  It was such a fun day.  I was able to reconnect again with Nancy from the Educational Theatre Association, and Joe Norton who is Director of Education at Broadway Cares.  It was so fun to be able to tell them about what I'm doing, and hear about where their lives are taking them.

That day I also had the opportunity to meet one young, eager Thespian named Henry O'Neal. Henry and I share a very special connection - he and I both have played the role of 'Region II Representative' and we are from the same High School!!  When we was deciding to run for the position, I was honored to help him write his speeches, give advice on his campaign strategies and prepare for his interview.  I was VERY proud when he called me to tell me he had also been awarded the position... and it was such a great day getting to know a little bit more about him. I also got to take him to his first viewing of 'Rent' (one of my personal favorite shows.) It is a huge honor to be an International Thespian Officer. I am still very proud to this day that I was given such an important responsibility.  I look forward to all of my Festival updates from him :)

The inaugural edition of the Flea Market in 1987 raised $12,000.  This year we raised a total of $547,658!!!! Incredible numbers.  The grand total of funds raised in the last 25 year is $9,185,327.  I can only imagine how many actors and families this money has helped.  I was so proud to have been a part of this event, and hope to be able to contribute much more in many BC/EFA flea markets to come!!

Telly Leung who played 'Wes' a lead Warbler on FOX's hit series 'GLEE' (P.S. to my sister in law Erin - yes, I did get to meet him, hug him and take a picture with him... the picture just isn't good enough to post on the blog! lol)

Well... That was Unexpected!!

So... AFTER a butt-kicking kick-boxing class DeWayne says "Ok, J. You ready to go?"  Here I am thinking that we're going somewhere to relax and get some work done - but this man had other plans for me.  He decided that we needed to take a hike. (wth?)  In my head I'm thinking "KILL. ME. NOW" 'cuz I was already worn out, but I'm so glad he made me go.  At the bottom of the hill on the hike was a stunning waterfall - who would've ever thought that Jersey would have waterfalls?!!

Here DeWayne posing on our hike down the hill... Hurricane Irene was kind enough to knock down lots of big, beautiful trees in the area :\

~Roots N Blues N BBQ~

Many people heavily underestimate the midwest and their involvement in the arts.  For those of you who think that there isn't anything going on - let me do you a favor and tell you about the 'Roots N Blues N BBQ Festival' that happens at the beginning of every fall in downtown Columbia, Missouri. It draws thousands of people every year and is a 2-day festival full of live music, BBQ, bars, art, bicycle rides, dancing, and some of the best people-watching opportunities ever!

I was fortunate enough to be a V.I.P. Guest of the Festival Directors (Polly and Steve Sweitzer) and their family.  Polly's sister Robin works at Lifetime Fitness in Jersey where I train, and has become a good friend of mine.  It's so nice to see a friendly face around the gym after getting my butt kicked!!  She was kind enough to invite me this past weekend, and I'm SO glad she did. I was treated extremely well.  I received chauffeuring in golf carts, backstage access, front-row viewing to music acts, free food and drinks and just pure entertainment with great company all day long.

This was the Festival's 5th year in existence and I'm sure it is just the beginning of a long-standing tradition for downtown "CoMo" (that's what the locals call Columbia.)  I felt a little sketchy being in 'Tiger Territory' - seeing as I am a true Husker Fan - but it was well worth the trip.

The performers came from all over, and it was such a great line up of artists.  Some of my favorites were: Dale Watson, Los Lobos and the up & coming Soul/Pop act from L.A. called "Fitz and the Tantrums."  I am using some of the pictures from Festival-Goers that were posted on the Facebook Fan Page (because not all of mine turned out) but to check out many more and get information on next year's festival, or even buy tickets head to any of the following links:

Check out these crowds!! I hope to be on this stage next year instead of 'Backstage' :D

Gibson Guitars Tour Bus... Dang. This is a nice one!

THANK YOU FOR SUCH A GREAT WEEKEND - I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR!!

Lifetime LOVER of Lifetime Fitness

One of the main focuses for my time in New York/New Jersey is getting in shape with the help of my Trainer/Manager DeWayne.  I'm SURE that I would be less enthusiastic about my daily work-outs (aka butt kickings) if I didn't have this stunning facility to train in daily.  It is 20 miles away from my host home, which would be about 25 minutes drive time if I were in the midwest.  In New York it's a good 50-65 minutes... but still TOTALLY worth it!

Lifetime Fitness is the name of the gym, and I thought I would share some of the photos of where I'm spending generous portions of time, with some of the friendliest and most motivated staff I have ever encountered.

CHECK. THIS. PLACE. OUT.

THIS is the room where I get my butt royally handed to me via kickboxing, jump-rope and anything else DeWayne (My Trainer/Manager) can think of torturing me with.  He's no joke, but absolutely fantastic. You're sure to be entertained and worked in any of his packed classes which are extremely popular amongst the Lifetime Members :)
Serious 'Spinning Room' complete with projection screens that are lowered to display videos of the 'Tour de France' while you workout - to keep you motivated, of course!
The most amazing rock climbing area I've ever seen... all built on top of a bungee-like tar pit.  Stay tuned for a post when I'm sure to have SUPER flattering photos from my butt in those harness things. Ha!

Tons of cardio-equipment... you'll never be bored!

Stunning indoor & outdoor pools.

Greetings from Staten Island!!

First off, I know that I stink at updating my blog - I WILL be better about updating it (especially since I have so many incredible things happening right now, and I don't want to forget any of it!)

I arrived in Staten Island, NY just a short 48 hours ago.  I have already completely moved in to my gracious host family's house (The Massamillo's) and been properly welcomed by refreshing cool breezes and rainfall, never-ending traffic, the most beautiful spa-like gym and the absolute WORST tolls... ever.  I spend $12.10 every day going back and forth between the house and my training facility. Crap. I really hope that I make the big bucks off my music since I'm going broke off these tolls!!

10 CENTS?!  I WISH!!

I have a rigorous schedule the next 5 weeks - networking, traveling, conditioning, rehearsing, recording, performing and getting my butt kicked @ the training facility.  I could not be surrounded by a more supportive team (DeWayne-Manager/Trainer, Danielle-Executive Assistant, James-Security) and I am feeling so blessed.  I'm grateful for the opportunity to be here working on my goals :)
